While the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S arrived in late 2020, the Xbox One is still available, at least as a used console. But is it a good idea to buy an Xbox One in 2022?
Let's take a look at what the Xbox One has to offer and whether you should still buy it with the next generation of consoles available.
How much do Xbox consoles cost?
Before getting into the details, it's important to consider the price of each Xbox console. While there are other factors in deciding whether an Xbox One is right for you, one of the most practical is value for money.
The Xbox One S retails for $300, while the more powerful Xbox One X has a standard price of $500. There's also the $250 all-digital Xbox One S, which is missing a disc drive. Since the original Xbox One is so much older, it's not worth thinking about right now.
However, you're unlikely to find an Xbox One device at these prices right now. In January 2022, Microsoft announced that it had discontinued production of all Xbox One consoles, including Xbox One X and Xbox One S. This means that they are taking advantage of key markets, where prices can fluctuate wildly.
The Xbox One lineup's sticker prices are exactly the same as the new Xbox Series X and Series S: the Series X is $500, while the Series S is $300. there's a newer, better console available for the same price.
Xbox One offers access to Game Pass
Xbox Game PassIt is the biggest benefit of owning an Xbox console. If you're not familiar, Game Pass is a monthly subscription that gives you unlimited access to hundreds of titles.
You can download the included games and play them on your Xbox as long as you're a subscriber, and it's packed with quality games. Additionally, all titles published by Xbox Game Studios enter Game Pass the day they are released.
Game Pass costs just $10/month to access the console. There's also Game Pass Ultimate, which is $15 a month and includes access to Game Pass on PC, as well as Xbox Live Gold and other perks. For more information, see ourcomplete guide for xbox game pass.
At the time of writing, there are only a few Game Pass titles exclusive to the Xbox Series X|S, allowing you to enjoy almost the entire catalog on one Xbox One. Xbox Series X|S will run games better and faster thanks to these consoles that include SSD and more powerful internals.
That said, if you want to try out a lot of titles on Game Pass, an Xbox One is a great way to do that. However, many of the same games are on Game Pass for PC. So if you have access to a decent gaming computer, an Xbox One is pretty redundant. Many PC Game Pass titles include controller support.
How long is or Xbox One?
As the Xbox One is an outdated console, it will eventually stop getting new games. We mentioned earlier that Microsoft has stopped producing Xbox One consoles, which means the system won't be around much longer. But how long should you wait for Xbox One to get support?
To give you an idea, let's take a look at the last generation. The Xbox 360 was released in 2005 and was discontinued in 2016. After the release of the Xbox One in 2013, the Xbox 360 continued to get some cross-generation games.

2014's Forza Horizon 2 was the last Xbox 360 entry in the Xbox exclusive series, while 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider was released for Xbox 360 and Xbox One. As for annual third-party titles, 2016's Madden NFL 17 was the last Madden to be released for Xbox 360.
Xbox One S and One X were released in mid-2016, which is different from previous samples. However, as Microsoft discontinued all Xbox One models together, it's doubtful that we'll see games for the Xbox One X but not the original Xbox One.
Some of the biggest Xbox exclusives released in 2021 did so on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, like Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite. However, this is unlikely to continue. Most of the big Xbox Game Studios titles announced without a release date, like Forza Motorsport and Fable, will come to Xbox Series X|S and PC only.
Based on that, 2022 could be the last year the Xbox One gets tickets to annual titles like FIFA and Call of Duty. And after Grounded's full release sometime in 2022, we wouldn't expect many Xbox exclusives to appear on Xbox One.
xbox as platform
If you're considering an Xbox One, you need to understand Microsoft's philosophy on its current consoles. Backward compatibility is an important factor: the Xbox One can play many Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles, while the Series X|S can play all of these and most Xbox One games.

Xbox Smart Delivery is another part of "Microsoft's commitment to cross-generational compatibility." It gives you the "best version" of the participating games you own, no matter which Xbox you're playing on. Smart Delivery also ensures that your progress is synced across all platforms.
For example, if you already purchased Gears 5 on Xbox One and later upgraded to Xbox Series X, you can play the Series X-optimized version of the game on your new console. This comes at no extra cost and you don't have to worry about choosing the right version in the store.
Let's say you buy a game like Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One that doesn't yet have an optimized version for Series X|S. If you're upgrading to a Series X, you can play the Xbox One backwards compatible version on your Series X and then upgrade to the optimized version when it becomes available.
These features, combined with Game Pass, which basically offers the same experience across both generations, means you can take everything from Xbox One to Series X|S with you.
You might be aware that Microsoft also treats Windows as part of that gaming platform. All current Xbox exclusives are also available on PC, which means that a gaming PC is a good Xbox alternative.
Should you buy an Xbox One in 2022?
All things considered, is the Xbox One worth it now? In almost all cases, we would say no. Since the retail price of Xbox One X and Xbox One S is the same as Xbox Series X or Series S, there is no good reason to buy an older console. The newer generation offers faster performance and is a more future-proof purchase compared to investing in legacy hardware.
While you can now access most of what makes Xbox great on Xbox One, that won't be for long. Xbox exclusive titles will soon be unavailable on Xbox One, and Game Pass may offer additional exclusive titles for Xbox Series X|S.
Finding the Xbox Series X or Series S is often difficult for many reasons. But that shouldn't induce you to buy an older console. Wait for the new consoles to arrive and your money will be much better spent.

If there are some Xbox titles you can't wait for and you have a decent computer, check to see if they're included with Game Pass for PC. This may delay you until the X|S series is back in stock.
In short, we only recommend buying an Xbox One in 2022 if you can find it used at a deep discount and don't plan on upgrading for years to come. Otherwise, the X|S Series' equivalent pricing and improved performance make the newer systems worth the wait. And if you already have a solid PC, do this. The Xbox One has almost sold out its entire life.
Xbox across generations
Now you're better equipped to decide if an Xbox One is right for you. Whichever you choose, Game Pass is a great service that offers plenty of solid titles to keep you busy. And Microsoft's commitment to delivering the best experience across all Xbox systems is commendable.
